From the Black Country, UK, Chartreuse are a difficult band to summarise in a few sentences. Rich, soulful vocals and fluttering instrumentals are reminiscent of the likes of Portishead. But whilst it’s both tempting and a compliment to compare this band to other great groups, we want to avoid too many comparisons here.
Chartreuse’s EP, Even Free Money Doesn’t Get Me Out Of Bed, is an 18 minute whirlpool of grandeur, grace and styles. We’d go as far as saying it’s one of the most assured, natural and moving EPs we’ve heard all year.
The highlight comes in the hammer-blow that is “Woman, I’m Crazy”. Written by singer Harriet, it’s a song about internalised negativity and defiance, anchored by the repeated line, “I’m amazed, I’m amazing. I’m a friend, I’m a woman, I’m crazy”. With cacophonous instrumentation and softly sung vocals, the song crashes and plummets with effortless poise. It’s exceptionally good.
