It’s almost cliché at this point that another prominent band look set to emerge from the ever-burgeoning Leeds DIY and alternative arts scene.
Holodrum are a seven-piece, consisting of a veritable smorgasbord of Yorkshire’s finest musical talent, seemingly formed almost as if one were to write a shopping list of notable band’s active and making waves in the music community. Including members of (but not limited to): Hookworms, Cowtown, Virginia Wing, Drahla and Xam Duo, with only two releases to date, and such varied influencing members, it’s unclear of exactly what to expect from the cooperative approach.
But, with first release ‘No Dither’ certainly living up to its track title and delivering an urgent and swelteringly incisive slice of DFA-inspired disco-punk, it’s certainly a promising start. ‘Low Light’ becomes the second single released in as many months, and doubles down on their claim to energetic, dancefloor-filling indie-rock. Shimmering synth-lines meander between grudging guitar wails throughout the track, while arpeggiating electronics combine with call and response vocals, leading to a chorus swell of monstrous proportions that will surely provide a key moment in live outings. While both tracks are certainly rough and ready at this early stage, there’s more than enough signalling Holodrum as the next big ‘it’ band the prolific Leeds scene has to offer.
