Brighton outfit Squid have been cooking up a storm over the past few months with the release of ‘The Dial’ via Speedy Wunderground gaining much deserved praise; now they’re back with the quirky new single ‘Houseplants’ proving Squid have a few unexpected tricks up their sleeve.
‘Houseplants’ doesn’t waste any time, delivering disco-punk vibes with one of the most intense and lively vocal deliveries on record. But there is a surprise around the corner… the verse builds and bursts into a psychedelic breakdown that is unsettling in the best way possible, giving the listener time to take a breather from the driving rhythms before being pulled back in.
There’s a unique sense of sincerity and honesty that stands on the border of tongue in cheek at times that really make Squid stand out. With upcoming appearances at the likes of Green Man and End of the Road festivals later this year Squid are definitely set for big things.
