In a short period of just over two years, Jackie Mendoza has seen her songs evolve from ukulele pop ballads, to chart friendly synth pop buzzers, to alluringly murky, downtempo drifters.
With a wonky electronic gait to her latest single “De Lejos”, Mendoza combines Latin dance beats and guitar with eccentric synth-driven soundscapes. Sung in Spanish (her family originates from Tijuana, Mexico) and delivered with airy, often borderline-spoken vocals, the single wouldn’t feel out of place on a Tirzah record but stands alone for its charming peculiarities and amalgamations of style.
