Manchester’s leading tastemaker Heist or Hit did promise us even more great new music in 2019 (clearly not satisfied with their already top-notch roster of Her’s, Pizzagirl, Honey Moon), and they’ve already delivered less than 30 days in.
New signee Guest Singer hails from Doncaster and provides some of the synth-laden 80s nostalgia we loved on the latest Pizzagirl offerings, but with more present-tense lyrical leanings. Interested in delving into the millennial mindset, Jake Cope & co. question the ridiculous pseudo-profound trawlings on Instagram and beyond. The track begins with the witty “Do you live by the words on the backdrop of a well shot holiday hotspot?” which is, come on, hilarious. This can also be applied to the downstairs toilet walls of middle-aged women, but I don’t think that’s what they’re really going for here.
Working with Matt Peel (Eagulls, PABH, Menace Beach) in a
room filled top-to-bottom with vintage synths, the 3-piece managed to created our
favourite krautrock-inspired indie banger of the year.
