What’s New? Sharon Van Etten – Comeback Kid

Wow! Four years ago we weren’t sure if we were ever going to get another Sharon Van Etten album ever again. The haunting 2014 album Are We There seemed to take it out of the New Yorker and there were unrefuted suggestions that she wanted to call it a day. Musically, she was done. Over the next few years, other artistic opportunities emerged; she acted in the Netflix drama The OA along with an appearance in Twin Peaks. Oh, and she became a mother, went back to school and created the soundtrack for movie Strange Weather.

These new artistic expressions seem to have ignited a spark in the thirty-seven-year-old because a new album has just been announced, accompanied by a tantalising new single prophetically entitled ‘Comeback Kid’. Don’t expect the Sharon Van Etten of old, as the track indicates a musical shift that may take some getting used to.

Van Etten recently made the assertion upon its release that she “didn’t want it to be pretty,” and the dark, driving synths and clattering percussion are redolent of Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs amongst others. Gone are the sombre guitars, strings and tender piano you might associate with this most ingenious of musicians, and the shift is a tantalising insight into the rest of the album. Remind Me Tomorrow will be out on January 18, 2019.
