Long the champion of up-and-coming artists, Live at Leeds has earned itself the reputation of being the British festival to get your fresh music fix – and a glance at the 2018 lineup only confirms it. In a brand spanking new feature, we’re partnering with LAL to bring you an interview with your new favourite band every week, alongside their top picks of new acts on the scene and a playlist of musical influences. So who better to kick us off with Sports Team – the London-based six-piece whose slacker sound and cynical lyrics make debut EP ‘Winter Nets’ definitely worth a purchase:

WHO ARE WE?:

Hi! Please introduce yourselves:

Individually, we’re Rob, Al, Oli, Ben, Henry and Alex. Together we’re Sports Team.

Where are you from?

We’re from all over the UK, but now we’re based in Harlesden. Somewhere between the New Atlas Café and the McVities factory. When the wind’s blowing North, you can smell the malt from the ovens.

How long have you been performing?

Not long. Sports Team was the first thing any of us did musically. Things started getting serious early last year, then the EP came out last week.

Describe your sound in one sentence:

Joyful.

What part of Live at Leeds are you most excited about?

Al grew up that way, so I think she’s just excited to finally do a hometown gig. We haven’t been told what venue we have yet, but fingers crossed for Brudenell.

Tell us your plans for the rest of 2018:

We have a lot of shows lined up. A tour with label-mates Pip Blom in March, then onto The Great Escape, Live at Leeds and a load of festivals in May and June. There should be a second EP pretty soon, we’re recording that now. Then a bit later in the year a big London show which we’ll announce soon enough.

OUR INFLUENCES:

OUR 3 NEW BAND PICKS:

PIP BLOM – ‘BABIES ARE A LIE’:

“Our Nice Swan label mates and all round greats. They’re from the Netherlands and are incredible live. We’re really excited to be off around the UK with them in March.”

DAMA SCOUT – ‘PAPERBOY’:

“Dama Scout played with us at one of our first London headlines. This is one of many hits they’ve written.”

URANIUM CLUB – ‘WHO MADE THE MAN?’:

“I don’t really know how new Uranium Club are, they’re a secretive bunch. Henry just got the vinyl of ‘All of Them Naturals’ and it’s wild. One of the best records of 2017 for sure.”
