Safe Bets Wednesdays returns for another round of brilliance

Last week we introduced you to Safe Bets Wednesdays – a weekly night at London’s Sebright Arms, orchestrated by CLEAN and Polly, that’s exposing the best new bands the scene has to offer. With Blueprint BlueMATAMeal Deals and Dan Lyons all set to smash tonight’s date, we bought you another round of picks from these smashing artists to beat those January blues:

BLUEPRINT BLUE

HOT CHOCOLATE – ‘YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY’:
“This is a great song – and I really like the Hot Chocolate guitar sound!”

NED DOHENY – ‘GET IT UP FOR LOVE’:
“I heard this at a 1 year old’s birthday party, and it’s been busting the blues ever since.”

AL KOOPER & SHUGGIE OTIS – ‘LOOKIN’ FOR A HOME’:
“A killer guitar solo from Shuggie!”

DONALD FAGEN – ‘WALK BETWEEN RAINDROPS’:
“It’s gross outside, but Fagen makes it seem alright.”

MATA

LAST RESORT DEBT COLLECTING AGENCY – ‘LET’S ALL HANG TOGETHER’:
“In these cold January days, let’s start off on a uplifting yet reflective note.  Political grooves from Dave Mankind. Lovely legend from South London. Also the video was filmed by Lou Smith – one of the great documentarians of our time.”

RICHENEL – ‘AUTUMN’:
“This song will warm up the coldest of hearts. Prince-esque funk for your ears.”

BAXTER DURY – ‘MIAMI’:
“My third choice will get yah up atoms pumping. Probs my fave album from last year – pure sex and I love the lyrics.”

SANDII – ‘ZOOT KOOT’:
“Says it all. Like a time travelling Kate Bush in her own space studio. In space.”

SPEED, BLUE & SHINKI – ‘DON’T SAY NO’:
“This tune always takes me to a better place.”

MEAL DEALS

UNIVERSAL TOGETHERNESS BAND – ‘MORE THAN ENOUGH’
“This is the best song ever written” – Patrick (bass)

LIONEL ROBINSON – ‘STEPPIN OUT’
“Undeniably groove, coupled with lyrics about feelin’ yourself and bein’ a boss” – Connor (lead guitar)

MARCOS VALLE – ‘ESTRELAR’
“I don’t speak the language, but I still sing along as if I know the words” – Glenn (drums)

ZED BIAS FT NICKY PRINCE & MC RUMPUS – ‘NEIGHBOURHOOD’
“Absolute classic banger – how can it not make you feel good good good?” – Harry (vocals/rhythm guitar)

DAN LYONS

THE GO BETWEENS – ‘CATTLE & CANE’:
“The Go Betweens are from Australia, and although I’ve never been, this song conjures up visions of the outback and lonely farmers, somehow that makes me feel happy and optimistic; my friend Victoria lives in Brisbane and she introduced me to this song.”

SONIC YOUTH – ‘KOOL THING’:
“This song makes me feel really excited every time I put it on. Good for waking up in the morning.”

GEORGE HARRISON – ‘MY SWEET LORD’ (LIVE @ CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH):
“George Harrison’s guitar playing, whether as part of the Beatles or on his own, has been the soundtrack to my life since I was a baby, he’s so intricate and precise but never sounds sterile.”

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND – ‘WHO LOVES THE SUN’ (ALTERNATE MIX):
‘’Who doesn’t?”

SYD BARRETT – ‘TERRAPIN’:
“This is a beautiful song, written by a genius. It feels as if he’s in the room if you close your eyes…”
