It’s such a good band name that it’s almost a surprise to find out that Dead Naked Hippies are in the here and now, rather than some early- 90’s-not-famous-at-the-time-but-probably-inspired-the-Strokes group. But it seems no-one adopted the moniker until this Leeds trio signed to local tastemakers Dance to the Radio.
It’s been a busy few months, hitting Leeds Festival this summer and touring through with Dream Wife this autumn – and to keeping the ball rolling, the threepiece bring you their recently released self-titled EP, that’s a terrific piece of thrashy post-punk.
Newest single ‘I Wanna Know Ya’ evokes scuzzy Yeah Yeah Yeahs vibes with Joe Clarke’s fuzzy guitars and a catchy, jaw-jutting ‘woo-hoo-hoo’ running through. It’s the type of song you want to hear in a dingy, sweaty rock club – and may well do some time soon.
Opener ‘Smother’ is particularly interesting, with rollicking guitars building and slowing in unexpected places underneath Lucy Jowett’s aggressive vocals. ‘Do I Bore You?’ slows things down a touch, more sinister and swaggering, before the trio launch into the blistering ‘Stay Quiet’ for a balls-out finale.
It’s apparently a political album, with the group writing it in the aftermath of the general election – but with so much distortion, half the time Jowett’s vocals are unintelligible. Nevertheless, it’s a gripping four songs that’s sure to set Dead Naked Hippies up nicely for a bumper 2018.
