When you get a premiere this faultless, it’s hard to hold back the excitement; and London newbies Pet Deaths have unquestionably delivered what looks to be our favourite song of October.
Formed after meeting on the doorstep of J.G. Ballard’s house in Ladbroke Grove last year, Liam Karima and Graeme Martin are the pair to thank for ‘I Can’t Complain’ – the second taste of the duo that follows August’s debut, ‘At the Bottom of the Hill’. This latest pensive track is a pure treat for the ears, featuring twangy, Elliott Smith-esque guitar chords and hauntingly sublime vocals. It’s bittersweet, it’s ethereal – but most importantly, it’s five minutes of sheer musical beauty that sounds nothing like anything out on the scene at the moment.
With early days sounding this good, and already working alongside producers James Hall and Ian Davenport, be certain that Pet Deaths are a name you’ll be hearing of a lot very soon. We’re certainly not complaining.
