When you write about music, there’s certain labels and acts that you earmark – figures that whenever they release something new, giddy excitement gathers over you as you hastily drop whatever you’re doing to listen. On rare occasions, the two combine – like Magana and Audio Antihero. So it’s with great excitement that we’re premiering Magna’s latest single, released via the consistently excellent South East London label.
Originally appearing on CHUCK’s Frankenstein Songs for the Grocery Store EP, ‘Oceans’ sees Jeni Magana strip away the driving, chugging rhythm of the original. Reduced to its bare essentials, the track becomes more spectral and sad, with Magana’s beautiful voice stripping and slowing down the underlying melancholy of CHUCK’s work to make it her own. It’s definitely worth the listen – we promise.
