This should really be an album review; Siv Jakobsen’s debut, The Nordic Mellow, is scheduled for UK release on the 25th August.
But with time pressing, I was at least able to listen to one of its recently released singles, ‘Berry & Whythe’. The track refers to Jakobsen’s time spent in hip Williamsburg, Brooklyn – a mecca for musicians where she shared an apartment between two roads, Berry Street and Whythe Avenue. ‘Berry’ is a play on words, as Jakobsen weighed up whether or not to ‘bury’ her experiences there and move on.
‘Berry & Whythe’ shares the same melancholia and soulful frustration heard on The Nordic Mellow’s first single, ‘Like I Used To’. There’s a pervading sadness in the song – and you can imagine her inner turmoil as she wrestles with a failing relationship and homesickness; “I’m at my best with an ocean between me and you”.
Siv Jakobsen has the perfect, enchanting voice for this exact genre. Watch the live acoustic vido of ‘Berry & Whythe’ below:
