Italian songwriting duo M w S are new to the British music scene – recently releasing a new single, ‘Cliché’ – and with them, they’ve brought a fresh sound which is perfect for a bag of cans in the sun on a Saturday afternoon. Guaranteed.
Despite previously working with other talented musicians and producers back home in Italy, and having support from premium Italian radio station Radio Capital, the calling for soul and R’n’B is not as strong as it is here. Moving to the UK was a huge decision for the duo – a promising one, considering the huge British fanbase for their genre – however, this plan was almost never seen to fruition. The day they booked their tickets was the very same day that we decided to leave the European Union. On this, the duo state:
“The Brexit decision made us feel a bit uneasy about heading to the UK only at the beginning… We have a lot of faith in London, which we know is a very open city that somehow needs people from all over the world. We knew that this was the place for our music so we had to make it happen regardless”
Their forthcoming EP “Swim”, feels like a little slice (pun intended) of their Italian hometown, brought to the concrete jungle of London. Undoubtedly a release for the summer months. The first single is the ridiculously vibey “cliché”. It’s a stunning exercise in subtle songwriting and production, we’re treated to gorgeous J Dilla-esque piano samples, layered over a solid groove and incredibly funky bass-line. It’s the perfect balance of edgy production and accessible hooks.
