Holy shit. Wand are back.
The LA quintet have announced the release of their fourth LP Plum, out via Drag City on the 22nd September – and they’ve kindly blessed us with a teaser of what’s to come in the form of the album’s self-titled first single.
‘Plum’ showcases a softer side to Wand; think with less face-melting riffs, more suspenseful piano psychedelia. Don’t panic that the magical Wand sound that you came to love so dearly has done a runner; ‘Plum’ is a gem of a track that’s only made better with the accompanying, duck-filled video shot by Romain Peutat and Asal Shahindoust.
Since 2015’s 1000 Days, vocalist/guitarist Cory Hanson has toured with Ty Segall, recorded a solo album, and extended Wand by two members – guitarist Robbie Cody and keyboardist/vocalist Sofia Arreguin. On the band’s evolving sound thanks to the extended lineup, Hanson says: “‘Plum’ transpires between our collective harmony and individual dissent. It felt like we were each trying to obstruct a clear path in order to discover new space. As a total accident, ‘Plum’ wound up being a miniature blueprint to the musical language we developed together over months of dedicated writing.”
The announcement of Plum is joined by a host of ripe new tour dates for 2018. With Wand’s last Manc date at Soup Kitchen being such a storming success, there’s no excuse you have to miss the next one.
