ASFTD #235: NAO – Bad Blood

Who is she?

It seems that everyone BUT me knows who NAO is but for those of you in a similar boat, then here we go. She is a London based singer who already has a couple of EP’s to her name and is also running her own label. Hype Machine #1’s appear to be a speciality of hers too.

What does the track sound like?

Distinctive vocals and a sound similar to that of past collaborators Mura Masa. It has an addictive sound, one that I knew I liked within the first thirty seconds of the track starting. This is one for fans of FKA Twigs and 90’s R&B.

When is the next release?:

NAO will be releasing her debut album, which is currently untitled at some point in 2016 on her own label – Little Tokyo.

‘Bad Blood’ is the first single to be taken from it.

Where can you see her?:

Thursday 3rd December – Heaven, London
Tuesday 8th December – The Green Door Store, Brighton
Wednesday 9th December – The Exchange, Bristol
Thursday 10th December – Headrow House, Leeds
Friday 11th December -Broadcast, Glasgow
Friday 18th December – The Warehouse Project, Manchester w/ Jungle

Why should you listen to it? (the PR bit):

NAO’s vocal on “Bad Blood” is brilliant. It’s rich, elastic and perfectly intertwined with the bold synth sounds produced by Grades, who also worked on “Inhale Exhale”, NAO’s Radio-1-playlisted single from her last EP. It’s soulful, experimental and unique, marking NAO out as one of the most exciting new talents not just in the UK but anywhere.

NAO has worked with the likes of A.K. Paul, Kaytranada, Jungle, Mura Masa and Disclosure, on whose latest album she appears, adding her distinctive vocals to “Superego”. She then went on to open for Disclosure at the Apple Music Festival at the Roundhouse in September.
