An introduction to Daniel Rossen

I’m not sure what made me decide to do one of these on Daniel Rossen first, but he’s an interesting character with a lot of strings to his bow and so I figured.. why not?

Daniel is best known for the his work as co-lead vocalist in the band Grizzly Bear but originally formed a group, with his then roommate, called Department of Eagles. He has also recently released his own solo work in the form of an EP during 2012.

I do love Grizzly Bear, and Edward Droste is great, but I’ve always preferred the songs that Daniel Rossen brings to the table.  My favourite one of his that is featured on a Grizzly album is definitely ‘On a Neck, On a Spit’ from the album ‘Yellow House’.   However, this doesn’t mean that he hasn’t got others that are almost equally as good (I’m thinking ‘Deep Blue Sea’).

The album ‘In Ear Park’ by the Department of Eagles is an absolutely incredible album.  I’ve listened to it far too many times than I’d care to admit and for me, it’s better than anything Grizzly Bear have done.  I can’t stress enough how much I recommend for you to listen to this album if you’re a fan of GB.  The first album however, is pretty hit and miss, so I wouldn’t recommend it too highly.

Finally we come to his debut solo EP, ‘Silent Hour/Golden Mile’.  It’s only 5 tracks long but all 5 are belters.  If it’s a sign of things to come from a, hopefully released soon, debut solo album then we’re in for something pretty special.  Definitely check this out.

There’s not much more that I can say about him so I’ll let his music do the rest of the talking.  I’ve compiled some favourites below.  Let me know what you think in the comments!
